Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Edifício Acaiaca [Portuguese]

Architecture

The Acaiaca Building was the first high-rise building in Belo Horizonte, and for a brief period it was even the tallest building in Brazil. Built during the Second World War, it features an air-raid shelter in the basement, in line with regulations adopted by Brazil in 1942. The building's name and sculptural motifs are inspired by an indigenous legend from the region where the developer was born.
