The Pont du Gard was part of an aqueduct system of around 50 kilometres, which transported water from the springs near Ucetia (Uzès) to the Roman city of Nemausus (Nîmes). The bridge reaches a height of 49 metres and consists of three levels. The lower level which comprises six arches, is 142 metres long, 6 metres wide and 22 metres high. The middle level consists of eleven arches with a length of 242 metres, a width of 4 metres and a height of 20 metres. The upper level has 35 arches (originally 47), measures 275 metres (originally 360 meters) in length, 3 metres in width and seven metres in height.
