Named after Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, one of the leaders of the Minas Gerais Conspiracy who was nicknamed Tiradentes, the building served as the Brazilian parliament, housing the Chamber of Deputies, between 1926 and 1960. Following the transfer of the national capital to Brasília in 1960, it served as the state parliament of Guanabara, and subsequently of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
