Colonia del Sacramento, Department of Colonia, Uruguay
Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento [Spanish]
Basílica do Santíssimo Sacramento [Portuguese]
Iglesia Matriz [Spanish]
Architecture
When the town was founded in 1680, a first simple chapel made of straw and clay was built, which is why the structure is considered the oldest church in Uruguay. The current structure, built in 1810, was erected on the ruins of a stone predecessor built in 1699 and destroyed in 1777.
