Legislative Palace, southwest elevation

The Legislative Palace, a monumental edifice of Greco-Roman eclecticist architecture, serves as the seat of the legislative power of the Uruguayan state, the General Assembly. Completed after nearly three decades of construction, the inauguration of the palace took place on August 25, 1925, coinciding with the centennial celebrations of the Declaration of the Independence of Uruguay. Vittorio Meano, the architect of the winning design of the tender, died suddenly before he could be informed of his victory in the competition. As a result, he never had the opportunity to witness the realization of his project.
