Valongo Wharf, commemorative column

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Cais do Valongo [Portuguese]
Valongo Wharf, commemorative column

Architecture

The column is a reconstruction of the one erected to commemorate the arrival of Princess Teresa Cristina and the associated renaming of the Valongo wharf, which was given the name Empress Wharf (Cais da Imperatriz).

The Valongo wharf was the place for landing and trading enslaved Africans until 1831, when the African blockade banned the Atlantic slave trade to Brazil. In the twenty years it was in operation, between half a million and a million slaves landed at Valongo.
