Höxter, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Westwerk der Kirche St. Stephanus und St. Vitus [German]

Architecture

The Carolingian westwork is the oldest surviving part of the monastery complex. Originally built as a three-tower complex with two facade towers and a central square tower, the tower above the Choir of St John the Baptist was removed in 1185 due to deterioration. Fragments of unique wall paintings from the Carolingian period have been preserved in the interior.
