The Datong Mosque is one of the two most notable ancient Islamic temples in Shanxi Province. It combines classical Chinese architecture with Arabian artistic elements. According to an inscription on an imperial edict stele, the mosque was founded in 628 during the Tang dynasty. However, this date is disputed. Most of the current buildings date from the Qing dynasty.
