Architecture: Fisherman’s Bastion
The Fisherman's Bastion, a Neo-Romanesque monument constructed at the close of the 19th century, is situated on Castle Hill at the site of Buda's medieval fish market. It stands on a section of the former Buda city walls that had to be defended by the guild of fishermen, hence its name. It was built upon bastions erected by the Austrians after taking the city from the Turks in the 17th century. The structure's seven stone towers symbolize the seven Hungarian chieftains who founded Hungary in 895.
